Wii noob: can I play a dvd?

I thought I would be able to just drop in a dvd, and play it. I don't see why not. Why didn't nintendo build a console to do that? Certainly this would have been easy enough for nintendo to do.

I have been looking for a way to do this, and I am getting the feeling that my only options are complicated, expensive, time consuming, ugly hacks that might not be legal and/or might void the warranty, is that about right? Should I just give up on this, since it's not even worth the time, expense, and trouble?

I found one way to do this has to do with loading, then erasing this "legend of zelda" game, which I don't have. Also, something about loading homebrew channel, which I dont' understand. I think this is called "twilight hack" or something.

Then there is this "homebreware" software that costs $29 and I'm not sure if it directly plays the dvd, or if I use the software to copy a normal dvd into a wii format. I think the actual program is called wondershare, and is made by digital river. I have read that this is insanely slow, and may be a scam.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, you can only play DVDs through hacks. Imo it's not really worth it. As far as installing Homebrew, Nintendo has made many atempts to get rid of it. Most if not all recent updates to the firmware will take out things like that.

well the only way to play dvds on a wii is by installing software like homebrew(softmodding) which is not worth it imo since most updates of the wii firware will delete these kind of software which was installed the wii.

maybe in the future nintendo will add this feature like a dvd player as a channel you never know mate

I thought a while back Nintendo said they would offer an add on DVD player. Change of heart I guess.
